Microbiological Testing

Optimising Cooling Tower Safety: Streamlined Legionella Testing

Legionnaires disease, a severe pneumonia, can be contracted through the inhalation of Legionella bacteria in water droplets. The risk increases with age, weakened immunity, and lung health issues, making regular testing vital.
We recommend monthly testing of Heterotrophic Colony Count (HCC) and Legionella, with speedy results: HCC <200,000cfu/ml (Victoria) or <100,000cfu/ml (other regions), and Legionella <10cfu/ml.

State Testing & Notification Guidelines:

* VIC: Routine testing is encouraged, and the third positive Legionella detection should be reported.
* NSW: Monthly testing is mandatory.
* ACT: Monthly monitoring is advisable.
* SA: Annual Legionella testing is required, with immediate notifications.
* QLD: Monthly HCC and 3-monthly Legionella testing are recommended.
* WA: Ensure minimum monthly HCC and 3-monthly Legionella testing.
* TAS: Conduct monthly HCC testing and 6-monthly Legionella testing as per guidelines.
* NT: Legionnaire’s Disease is a notifiable condition.
